How to set up a bucket fly trap, and where to hang it
A bucket fly trap is about as simple as farm gear gets, but where you put it makes all the difference.
What you need
- A 5 gallon pail. Any standard one works.
- A trap top or side traps. Choose from the pop-in top, the screw-together top or the side traps.
- Attractant and a bit of water.
Do not want to put it together? The all-in-one trap comes fully assembled, and the fly trap kits have everything but the pail. For big jobs, the 55 gallon Fly Vault goes on a drum.
Setting it up
- Add the attractant and water to the pail, following the directions on the bait.
- Fit the top or snap in the side traps.
- Set it out and leave it alone for a few days. It takes a little time to get going.
Where to put it
- Out in the sun. Warm bait works better.
- Away from doors and people. It pulls flies in, so keep it 20 feet or more from where you want fewer flies, not right beside the barn door.
- Near where flies breed. Manure piles, feed areas and pens.
